DIY beginner project

First things first. I have never built anything before, nor really ever worked with wood. But I always wanted to.
So I figured, Iād just start and build something that looks relatively easy such as the shelf pictured above.
I would guess, Iād just get 3 long boards and 4 shorter ones for the walls? Any preparation of the wood needed? How do I attach them to one another without it being visible from the top? How to make it relatively stable? Any help appreciated!
