Cannot play with my friend

My friend and I both have a ps5 and we have tried to play together. We’ve probably spent roughly 2 hours combined trying to find workarounds and trying different things to play together but we constantly get a connection error. I’ve even added him on shift. Both of our WiFi’s work fine and I’m even wired into the router. What else can we do to try to fix this? We both bought this game specifically so we could play together.
