I can't get "Prinz Heinrich" to not suck when I play it, how should I be playing it?

I try sniping, keeping distance, little damage, poor shot grouping. And I take large amounts of damage, seems the enemy team gets good hits pretty easily. Am I supposed to do close(r) range? How close? What can I do if getting closer to the enemy just makes me an easy DD target? This is one of the very few ships I just cannot not suck at. Thanks.
