For me, the first time I read the series, I loved the first three books and then adored everything else from the first page of the fourth one. Once I got to the fourth book, I couldn’t put the series down. I understood in some general way what people meant when they talked about “the slog,” but I never felt it, and I was never bored or disappointed with the series.
All these years later, it’s still the single best literary journey I’ve ever gone on.
But I do feel a little differently about the books as I re-read them now. I’ve found that the first four books are 10/10, and I even love the first three way more than I did the first time around. (And I did quite like them a lot during my first read.) But I’m re-reading The Fires of Heaven now and find myself actually getting more than a little bored. I find that the chapters involving Siuan Sanche and Gareth Bryne chasing her dull and uninteresting.
I’m curious what other people think!
