How do you find affordable places?

I'm a 2nd year male university student..
I've tried roomies, kijiji, apartment listings...
These rooms are either scary, full of pets (i'm allergic), they want female occupants, or they charge $1200-1400 after all utilities, yet student aid only is geared to provide people with like $600-700 for living expenses, and if you work they deduct that amount from your anticipated need..
How do people go to school and live if they don't have relatives feeding them money?
