Road trip to Toronto/Southern Ontario via Trans-Canada or Interstates?

I'll do a road trip to Toronto/Southern Ontario in mid June. I'm still debating if I should travel via Trans-Canada or Interstates. Considering the insane gas price, I can save a lot on gas if I take interstates. On the flip side, there are other costs if I cross the border: roaming fee, lodging (seems more expensive?), dealing with customs (my cat will be travelling with me)
Anyone has done a trip recently? I'd like to hear your opinion.
