Hello:
I recently ran into an issue with SQL Server 2005 service pack 2 and Windows Installer 4.5 on windows server 2003 R2. The situation is that the update of SQL Server Setup Support files crashes during SP2 and SP3 installation with it present but it's needed for an update to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 (I think Update 4 on up) so just remove MSI 4.5 and ignore the warning that a bunch of updates and other programs __MIGHT__ stop working then install all the SQL Server 2005 updates and immediately reinstall MSI 4.5. Not the best solution out there but it's the only reliable one that I've found that works near 100%.
My question is: what are the possible long-term consequences of uninstalling MSI 4.5 and going back to 3.1 just long enough to install the Service Packs for SQL Server 2005 and then immediately reinstalling that update before it's actually needed for the CRM updates or anything else?
