How to deal with contaminated local water sources?

Post Body

I'm going to the Huron national forest for an overnight this weekend, so I called the local ranger office just to check in. He told me there is a "do not eat" advisory for any fish caught in the Au Sable river (the main water source in the area) and he said there's no advisory against drinking the water, but he wouldn't do it. He said this is due to large contamination of PFAS/PFOS in the river.

I'm only staying overnight so I'll just bring extra water. But if I was in the area for 5 days, how could I deal with something like this? I imagine any streams/creeks I find would be fed from the large contaminated river.

My understanding is that water filters like the Sawyer will not filter out chemical contamination. I'm still new to backpacking so please assume I don't know anything lol. WWYD ?
