Question about undercutting

So when it comes to undercutting, is there a point? Like if you put up your items at the same price as someone else on the CX will it sell yours first or will it sell the person who put them up first? Do you NEED to undercut to sell the items faster or can you just keep the price the same and still sell as fast?
