Alright, it may be hard for me to communicate my needs because the game I'm in is so far removed from the Meta it's practically it's own game (we've been playing for more than a decade in the same Chronicle) but here we go...
I'm challenging myself to play more morally ambiguous characters, most of my characters (yes, including the vampires, don't ask) are at the very least anti-heroes if not full on goody-two-shoes with fangs. I want to push that line as much as possible as well as use a clan our game has never really delved into, Enter Dr. Edith Barren, Tzimisce doctor/surgeon
Here's what I've got for her. Neonate level still and I'll be working on her background from here.
She was born around the early 1800s and born with multiple deformaties, sold to PT Barnum by her parents as an Elephant Woman and a relatively popular show until her sire (don't really have any details on them as they are likely dead in our game's storyline) either took pity or saw something in her upon viewing her and decided to first sculpt her into something more acceptable and when they found she had an almost inhuman tolerance to pain upon being fleshcrafted decided to ghoul her for some years, train her as a doctor and surgeon, then eventually change her. All while leading her down The Path of Lilith, where pain is seen as the answer to all questions, she is both a sadist and a masochist.
A member of the Sabbat in the intervening years she's insanely pragmatic, jumping from loyalty to loyalty, proving useful regardless and willing to throw old agreements aside so long as she's given a place to work.
Her Prey Exclusion is people who are well, she only feeds on the sick or deformed as a call back to her early days, she remembers the Kiss being one of the few bright lights in her existence back then and wants to give that to others who are in the same position as she was.
After the fall (an apocalypse our world has gone through where basically we went back to the dark ages for a time, losing all tech for awhile, with the help of mages and other things we have tech that works in pockets around the world, most is still in darkness though) she found herself serving the Balthory fields as a doctor and working on the Project (This was a Tzimisce creation in which people were fused together in a horrible thing and it was carved from to feed the populous that was under the rule of a Tzimisce lord, now defeated and deceased) and was either caught or ran away from the battle (whichever works better for my Storyteller, we have yet to decide) and needs to find a new faction to join. Hearing of the Twin Cities and their insane amount of resources in these Dark Times she's setting her creepy eyes that direction.
I've been using the same (several) characters in our Chronicle for a very long time, and it's been a long time since I've made a Kindred character and usually they're made as a request of my Storyteller, needing characters to begin a story he has an idea for, this is my first character that I've made because I had the idea and asked my storyteller for permission, which he excitedly gave, luckily.
So I need ideas of how to flesh her out further as well as ideas on playing a more neutral character. I need 'why' questions to think about so I'm not caught of guard when she's inevitably asked about her philosophies and ideas of the world. I'm just having trouble coming up with it on my own, most of my other characters are admittedly pretty 1 dimensional and only grow as I play with them. I want to start with a rounded character this time. So I'm ready when the rest of my group who are way better at making characters than I am, start asking questions in character, so I don't get tripped up in the middle of scene.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and any help given.
Edit to add: I would also love any suggestions on characters/movies/stories/even art pieces to serve as inspiration for a character like this. I've gotten as far as Hannibal Lecter (especially in the brilliant TV series) but beyond that I'm at a loss. Thank you!
