After my previous question, I realized that there's no good central repository of what spirits are at what rank.
So, here's an attempt at figuring it out. This chart is going to be consistent with existing descriptions so far as I'm aware, but I don't have every book so it's possible I'm missing something.
Rank | Werewolf Name | Modern Mage Name | Archaic Mage Name | Scale | Description | Examples |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
10 | Ilusah | Celestine | Emperor/Empress | Universal | spirits of concepts that are present in all or most things across the universe | Entropy, Energy, Space, Time |
9 | Ilusah | Celestine | Emperor/Empress | Cosmic | spirits of concepts that span multiple whole worlds | Stars, Water, the Solar System, Gaia (because of the several otherworlds present on Earth) |
8 | Ilusah | Celestine | King/Queen | Global | spirits of entire worlds or domains of existence | Luna, Helios, Mars, Father Wolf (as the spirit of the Gauntlet) |
7 | Ilusah | Celestine | King/Queen | Kingdom / International | spirits of major aspects of a world or domain of existence | Rivers, Animals, Fear, North America |
6 | Dihar | Greater Incarna | Prince/Princess | Principality / National | spirits of major aspects or particular examples of Rank 7 concepts | The Amazon River, Mammals, Fear of Death, Mexico |
5 | Dihir | Lesser Incarna | Duke/Duchess | Dutchy / Regional | spirits of things that dominate a large region (about the size of an American state), either physically or conceptually | Lake Michigan, Housecats, Fear of Spiders, New York City |
4 | Ensah | Greater Jaggling | Count/Countess | County / Local | spirits of things that dominate a small region (about the size of a county or large city), either geographically or conceptually | The Thames River, Stray Housecats, Fear of 13, the Chicago Public Library system |
3 | Ensih | Lesser Jaggling | Baron/Baroness | Barony / Neighborhood / Town | spirits of things that dominate a region within practical walking distance, or of obscure areas of human experience | Lake Minnewanka, Obese Housecats, Fear of Clocks, Hell's Kitchen |
2 | Hursah | Greater Gaffling | Knight | Building | broad groups of particular objects, creatures, or experiences | a dentist's office, all the wolves in a forest, the career of a hitman |
1 | Hursih | Lesser Gaffling | Squire OR Page | Room | spirits of narrow groups of particular objects, creatures, and/or experiences, or single notable objects, creatures, or experiences | a knife that has tasted blood, a wolf pack, a messy divorce |
0 | Muthurum | Mote | Pawn | Individual | spirits of particular mundane objects, creatures, and/or experiences | a chair, a cat, an assault |
NB 1: The examples assume each spirit is a spirit "of" some coherent thing. In practice, lower rank spirits especially are often spirits "of" a fairly arbitrary collection of whatever other spirits were nearby to eat at the time. It's usually better to think of these spirits not as the spirit of anything but as a spirit of sadness, or cats, or anger, and so on.
NB 2: Mages or werewolves only directly interact with spirits up to Rank 6 with any regularity. Rank 8 spirits are the highest rank spirits that anyone has convincing evidence of, and even then only a handful of them: Luna, Helios, and Father Wolf. The only spirit known to be higher than Rank 8 if she exists is Gaia, who is / would be Rank 9.
NB 3: A quick mechanical rule of thumb: a spirit's pool is usually roughly five times their rank. This also means that the implied pools of spirits of Rank 6 mean that they will almost always get an exceptional success for everything they do even if they're bad at it, so don't even bother rolling for them.
E: misspelled "Thames River".
