If you have ANY questions regarding upkeep, or issues/problems etc with a restored razor, please take my advice and reach the individual that did the work. A common fix that is found on a forum may not be the best and can possibly damage your newly replated/coated razor. That doesn't mean everything out there is incorrect or you can't try to resolve it without reaching out, just understand there may be negative consequences of your attempted fix.
As many of you know I've been lucky enough to have not one but two restored Gillettes; a Slim replated by Chris @ VintageReplate but disassembled/reassembled with painted numbers/spring etc by Cap @ VintageRazorRepair, and finally a Fatboy by Jay @ DeltaEcho.
Recently I noticed that some of the coating around the safety bar started coming off on the Fatboy again. Now when I first got it there was a similar issue around the exact same area but I hadn't even used it really and Jay told me to send it back and he would take care it. This time around I simply asked him if certain parts would require a recoat over time, but he remembered the previous issue and asked if I would send it back and he would inspect it because this is now the second time and he has no idea what's going on with it. It's off to Jay as we speak.
Next up is my Slim replated in rhodium with a rose gold adjustment knob. While in the IRC the other day I asked the lovely group of gentlemen what they recommended in order to resolve an insanely stiff tto knob (mineral oil was my first attempt but to no avail); vinegar bath was the answer. So I did a water vinegar mix and let a rather newly plated rhodium razor sit and soak. Well perhaps a bit too long because it discolored and possibly pitted the lower portion of the razor. I am not blaming those that suggested the idea and am in no way suggesting they gave me bad info.
While slightly depressed given my Fatboy is in the mail, not only was my Slim on the verge of seizing up altogether, the plating is possibly ruined. I sent Chris and Cap an email regarding my situation and they both asked that I mail the razor back to Cap for the tto issue and plating evaluation by Chris. I'm not sure if they want this known as there are people who take advantage of other's kindness, but I have to tell you these two gentlemen insisted on fixing the Slim free of charge.
I'm utterly blown away. I'm speechless actually and it's because of a recent unrelated artisan transaction regarding poor quality of work that had me rather upset on top of these two razors. Yet to have these three men (Chris, Cap & Jay) step up and take care of any and all issues regardless whether it was my fault, really has me at a loss for words. It's people like them and Maggards, and B&M, MLS, Chattilon Lux, and countless others that make this community one of the best I've ever had the privilege of being a part of.
Thank you. Thank you for being genuinely honest, and caring individuals, who even if the customer is an idiot like myself, you all step up in one way or another and help.
Lastly a huge shout out to /u/Huckleberryking for sending me a loaner razor as I will be out of safety razors until they're both fixed.
You guys rock, and are beyond awesome in every way.
