Hi fellas, got a review here for you guys. I'm by no means an expert at this kind of thing, in fact I don't write reviews at all. This maybe my second one? Anyway, I'm just a normal dude who likes wet shaving like the rest of this great community. With that said, I am also in no way affiliated with The Holy Black Trading Company in New York.
I was fortunate enough to get a spot on the List for /u/theholyblack new scent, Ramos Gin Fizz. I received it in the mail yesterday, and I finally had my chance to use it today. These are my thoughts.
Prep: Hot Shower.
Razor: Gillette Pocket Edition
Blade: Rapira Platinum Lux (3)
Soap: The Holy Black- Ramos Gin Fizz (Batch No. 10)
Brush: Every-Ready 300pbt w/22mm synthetic.
Post: Chatillon Lux- Vide Poche.
Profile: This is a soft soap, not a cream but not a hard tallow puck either.
Scent: It was described as being an " Orange Creamsicle" type scent and to my nose, it's exactly that. Orange creamsicle. I read a comment on another thread worrying that it was going to smell like Chiseled Face Groomatoriums "Orange Creamsicle", it does not. Where as CFG smells more like vicks vapor rub and oranges, this one smells exactly like the dessert you would find at your grocery store in the frozen food section. The scent is very strong on the puck but not so much on the face. Never the less, the scent is sweet, extremely pleasant and a pleasure to use.
8/10.
Performance: wether or not this makes a difference I am not sure but I thought I would let you guys know, I don't have a bowl, and the mug I own is being used by a Stirling Barbershop sample that won't die, so I took a small chunk of the soap out from the bag, and stuffed in the bristles of my brush..not exactly ideal maybe BUT it worked. I had a nice, thick creamy lather on my face, it was very slick, and effortless to build. This soap is able to take on quite a bit of water, which to me is a great thing. My razor glided off my skin, I was able to mow down w 2 days of growth with relative ease.
8/10
Post shave feel: I was not extremely satisfied with the post shave feel. The soap left my face feeling tight and pretty dry, not extremely dry but I felt my skin to be pretty tight and not soft like I get from other soaps (think Barrister & Man, Chiseled Face, or Tabac). This is my first time using any product from The Holy Black, so I cannot speak for the performance of the other soaps. I can only assume that this soap is part of a reformulation, and since it's a new batch I am simply giving my feedback in hopes that the formula will be improved upon it's official release.
4/10.
Summary: In conclusion, I can see this being a great summer time scent. It's sweet, refreshing, and very pleasant to use. I can see this being a part of my weekly cycle of soaps. It's easy to lather, and very slick. My one complaint is just the post shave, maybe that's not a big deal to some people but to me it isn't what I look for in a soap, and I'm hoping maybe it's just me, if it isn't then I hope that it's addressed in the future. Overall, I can see this having great potential to be an over-all great soap, and it can easily be one of my favorites. If you're looking for a sweet summer time scent, I would recommend this soap.
Just to add, Vide Poche matches very very well with the scent Of Ramos Gin Fizz. Extremely pleased with this combination.
