After reading about all the negative environmental impact of palm oil plantations, I'm considering switching to a tallow-based bath soap. There's a local processor, but the minimum order is 50,000 pounds, and a group buy with 5,000 people seems like a logistical nightmare.
On the other hand, the online sources I've seen seem to have sky-high shipping charges. I don't hold it against them - sending 10 pounds of grease cross-country via Priority Mail doesn't seem to be an efficient use of resources - but that doesn't mean I want to pay the freight (or an inflated price that covers "free" shipping).
Any ideas on where to score a gallon or two of the stuff? Or should I just start pestering my local supermarket's meat department for trimmings and rendering my own?
