So I’ve had this beautiful lady for 9 years now and driven it all over the country multiple times, lived in it for 3 years. Currently in FL and having intermittent electrical issues (weird 😌). I just had a tune up but since getting it back I’ve noticed when I shift, I will have to keep the pedal to the floor cuz it’s so slow and then within 15-60 seconds I will get a kick and it will suddenly start rapidly increasing speed as if the fuel injectors suddenly kick in - just had those cleaned as well as spark plugs. It is now losing power, going about 10 mph slower than usual, and taking longer to feel the “kick” while having to constantly keep pedal to the floor. Along with that I’ve had cold start issues intermittently, but they went away for 500 miles and then came back. I have to crank it for about 10 minutes to get her to start and when you put her into gear, she is sluggish, lights flash, then she dies and needs a few minutes to restart. This sometimes happens a few times until I can get her moving. Then if I stop to get gas and start her up, she fires no problems. If she sits for a few hours or days tho- no dice. She has new spark plugs, new ignition coil, new fuel injectors and distributor cap. I’ve checked for vacuum leaks. I just ordered a new fuel pump and am camped at an O’Reilly’s until it arrives tmrw. Over the years when it acts sluggish a new pump has usually fixed the issue so I’m going to throw some parts at it to see what happens. I seem to need a new pump annually.
Any advice? Thoughts? The whole fuel system is basically new so I’m wondering what it may be and hoping the fuel pump does it.
I replaced them and it solved most of my issues. What I really need is a new fuel infection ballast resistor but since they don’t make them anymore and there is no off market, I’ve been trying to hunt one down for months. Finally found one on eBay and it will be waiting for me in NC! I believe it’s failing, hence the intermittent electrical issues. So the fuel pump and filter are a bandaid on it for now, just had to limp it to an o’Reilly and camp in the parking lot for 26 hours before I could get the parts. Swapped it out last night and hit the road, got a few hundred miles in and she is much better. 😊
Tank is brand new, I’ve swapped out all hard lines and regular fuel lines 2x over the years. The rest of the fuel system is new, so hopefully the ballast resistor and a new wiring harness help solve these issues.
I have a brand new gas tank in there! I replaced the fuel pump in an o’Reilly parking lot and that got me going but what’s failing is my fuel injection ballast resistor! So that was just a bandaid but I finally found one from an old vanagon! Been looking for months!
UPDATE: replaced the fuel pump and filter in an 0’Reilly’s and that got going! Been cruising sans issues. It fixed most of them- what I really need is a new fuel injection ballast resistor and I finally found one from an old vanagon and that part will be waiting for me in NC! I’m also gonna go ahead and get the wiring harness some dude makes cuz I think that will also help solve a lot of these intermittent electrical issues. When in doubt- I’ve learned to throw parts at it 😋 THANKS FOR ALL YOUR WORDS.
Yuuup I replace it so often! But I did it again along with the filter, managed to limp it to o’Reilly and wait for parts. Swapped it out last night and got a few hundred miles in- it solved most issues. Finally found a balladt resistor from an old vanagon so I’m hoping that will fix the rest! Been looking for one for a minute, but I think that will fix the intermittent electrical issues- it’s def failing. But I’m back on the road!
