Drive not visible by My Computer

I have a Windows 10 PC - Surface Book Pro with a My Book Essential external hard drive connected to it. Device Manager shows that the drive is connected. There are no driver updates. All seems to be working fine there. The device does not show up under My computer. I checked Device Management & it shows my external HD as "Unknown Not Initialized" . I tried to right-click on it but "INitialize disk" is grayed out. What can I do from here to get into my drive & access the data? TIA!!
