Historically, the wars that Greece has historically fought have been either at sea, in the foothills, or in windswept mountain passes where few dare enter and where fewer still leave. The exigencies of modern war, however, especially against a foe who posesses a great advantage in naval assets and an even more distressing one in the air, means that the nation must find other means of supplying and repositioning our men and materiel at the front, as well as shunting more of them to and from there.
As such, the Papandreou Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Public Works and Welfare to begin grading and surveying the terrain that would be suitable for the construction of a four-lane motorway from Patras to Piraeus, then to Athens, and thence to Salonica, with room and materials set aside for the construction of defensive positions and supporting towns along the way. This identical copy of an Imperial autobahn, alongside a planned 1,000 meter long extension of the Athens Aerodrome's main paved runway and the extension and fortification of its facilities (including the oil farm) is expected to be just the start of the great Greek experiment of modernization (and hopefully not) at the expense of the public debt.
Nonetheless, the Kingdom as we know it may not exist in any form in a few months if all does not go according to plan, so why not build the roads now (and provide good jobs for hardworking citizens) and worry about looting the difference from the Ottomans later? It's not like most of our creditors will still be alive, if the Syndies get them anyways...
