June 24-28, 1936

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Convention Hall, Philadelphia

Following the combination of the Progressive, Republican and Democratic Parties in early 1936, the issue of where the National Convention was to be held to the newly established 'National Unity Party' threatened to create an early divide in the party with some members split between holding the venue in Ohio as opposed to Pennsylvania. However, due to fears of SPA protestors potentially disrupting the proceedings as well as the political realization that Ohio is most likely not going to flip back the NUP in the upcoming election, allowed the debate for the venue to effectively be over with Philadelphia selected to host the NUP Convention not only because of Pennsylvania's potential as a swing state come this November, but also the historical relevance the city holds because of the Founding Fathers.

Day 1

The start of the convention was marred as the invocation given by Minister Marshall L. Shepard was disrupted by one South Carolina Senator Ellison D. Smith, who walked out of the convention shouting, "By God, he's as black as melted midnight! Get outa my way!" upon seeing the black minister. Smith disturbed by not only Shepard's prominent position but also Wallace's personal views regarding African-Americans would later give a press conference stating that he is leaving the National Unity Party, stating that this "Isn't the party I joined to save America from run. This is the party that will drive America into the ground at the behest of the Socialists should they ask."

Day 2

Following popular accumulation without any dissenting voices - the loss of the unpopular Ellison D. Smith having reduced intraparty tensions quite a bit - Henry A. Wallace is hereby officially declared the National Unity Party's presidential candidate following successful primaries and the full public backing from the Establishment. However, as voting for who to be his Vice President commenced, it quickly became apparent that no favorite son or established Establishment runner up held the majority needed to become Vice President, with the front runners for Vice President being Senator Quentin Roosevelt, Speaker of the House John N. Garner, and Vice President Charles Curtis. Following a decisive first round of voting in which no candidate got a majority of votes, with only Senator Quentin Roosevelt getting a 1/3 of the total votes, the Convention elected to shut down early as Wallace, Garner and Roosevelt quickly began to work behind the scenes in order to prevent a fiasco similar to the 1924 Democratic Convention in which 103 ballots were cast in the span of a month.

Day 3

Once the Convention reconvened, a new series of votes were cast for Wallace's Vice President pick leading to the unexpected nomination of one Sam Rayburn of Texas - formerly a member of the House before losing his seat to the AFUP in the 1932 election. While a fair number of favorite sons still existed - primarily in New England's and Kansas's delegations, most of the NUP quickly fell in line, voting for Congressmen Rayburn who had to be rushed in from Bonham, Texas in order to make it to his acceptance speech on time. Once Rayburn was voted in as the Vice Presidential nominee, the question of what the party's platform was going to be quickly began to be a potential issue as all three former parties with drastically different views on governance, social issues and economic issues would now have to create a common party platform that would have to change both the SPA's and AFUP's own platforms, but also keep the coalition from falling apart.

Day 4

While the party continued to finalize the final details of the platform, various keynote speakers addressed the crowd as leaders of state delegations worked behind the scenes. Wallace and Rayburn's acceptance speeches were scheduled but due to a delay in confirming the platform and compounded by one speaker exciting his allotted time by an hour, the acceptance speeches and the publishing of the party platform were postponed until the 28th, with the speeches set to take place in Franklin Field.

Day 5

Henry A. Wallace and Sam Rayburn accept their respective nominations, and the party manifesto is released and disseminated across the nation.
