After the recent decision by the German government to ban pro-French organizations, the Reichspolizei has begun cracking down on French Nationalist and Syndicalist forces in the country, resulting in a number of shootouts and a bombing in the country. The shocking violence of these attacks have unsettled the German population, many of whom had no idea that armed insurgents were among their ranks until the recent crackdown. The two countries edge closer to war.
June 1936 - Strasbourg Raids
In Strasbourg, a hotspot of nationalist and syndicalist activity, the Reichspolizei raided a number of known French hideouts and taverns. The success of the police was overwhelming, killing and capturing dozens of accused French Nationalists and Syndicalists while taking no casualties themselves, severely curtailing the ability of French forces to operate in that area.
Across the rest of the country, police experienced somewhat less success. A number of pro-French groups were routed or captured but several groups put up significant resistance; a Syndicalist cell in Stuttgart shot dead four brownshirts when they tried to raid their meeting place, before dispersing underground. Nevertheless, the police have experienced some success in suppressing the pro-French and Syndicalist presence in the borderlands of the country.
June 29, 1936 - Barerstraße Bombing
In response to the Reichspolizei crackdown, French Syndicalists attacked the headquarters of the Reichspolizei along the Barerstraße in Munich. A car bomb, loaded in a taxi, was parked by French agents in front of the building. The two perpetrators escaped before the Reichspolizei guards understood what was happening, and the resulting explosion killed 13 and injured two dozen others. The strongly built stone building survived the destruction attempt mostly intact.
The Reichspolizei responded to the bombing with increased raids which netted a moderate amount of prisoners. The RP was seen to shoot nine captured French Syndicalists in cold blood, but DVLP publishers did not allow this news to be spread. Pro-FAUD newspapers and those in France and abroad did run these reports, some with great exaggeration.
These events seem to only be the beginning of an ongoing insurgent problem in the German Empire. While many pro-French and French Nationalist forces have been captured or killed, many remain at large and beyond the grasp of the relatively small Reichspolizei.
