SANTIAGO - A new wing, under construction since January, is finally open at the National Zoo of Chile. While speculation surrounded the subject matter of the new wing, it turns out that it will be focusing on the South Atlantic ocean and the wildlife found there. The exhibit opened with enclosures featuring penguins and the striated caracara, both avian species found on the southernmost tip of Chile and in Patagonia.

In addition to the live animal exhibitions, the South Atlantic wing also features an exhibit on whaling in the South Atlantic, particularly around the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. Included is a large statue of a morsa or walrus, commemorating the disastrous Portuguese exhibition to the South Georgia islands earlier this year. It is reported that the morsa statue is already one of the most popular things to see at the zoo, for, in the background, the Portuguese flag originally planted on South Georgia is hung upside down in defiance of the reactionary threat.

"The morsas are, apparently, syndicalists!" the plaque under the statue notes.
