As part of a defensive operation against possible foreign aggression in the South Atlantic, the Chilean Navy today undertook a mining operation of the area around Las Malvinas (the Falkland Islands). Three minelayers, escorted by a destroyer, sailed from Puerto Montt in late January and began mining on February 2nd, completing their operation the next day.

Stanley, Queen Charlotte Bay and the Falkland Sound all received mine barriers to prevent any usage of the protected areas of Las Malvinas by enemy ships. The mine barrier will serve to prevent resupply by enemy ships or occupation of Stanley. The local Republican garrison was supplied with information regarding this operation, and a local pilot was trained on the path through the mine barrier so that local fishermen can maintain their livelihood and the local garrison can keep supplied with food.

The Chilean Navy thanks the Malvinas Garrison for their cooperation in this matter, and hopes that any further foreign aggression in the South Atlantic can be avoided.
