The United States Emergency Administration (Colloquially named the Military Government)

MacArthur’s seizure of power was nowhere from pretty. Most Democrat and Republican politicians escaped from his grasp with most now in hiding, possibly in their residence. Most other actors, however, did not have time to react, which affored MacArthur and the US military the time to seize a large portion of the country before John Reed and the SPA could form a government in Chicago.

With Huey Long seizing power in the south, both him and MacArthur are in an uneasy alliance for now. The decision to give himself the position of Executive Governor shows intent in remaining under MacArthur, however still denoting Long as having more power than your ordinary subordinate.

Speaking of subordinates, not everyone in the Army and Navy was happy with the MacArthur putsch. A number of generals and admirals discontent with the immediate authoritarian regime fled to what they see as a moderate democratic claimant to the United States in New England (Basically PSA New England’s generals aside from those who are actually from states in the West Coast). Long unpopular with the other generals in the US Army, MacArthur is confronted with the collection of his peers, the likes of Marshall, Craig, King, Nimitz, as they demand him stepping down from his dictatorial positions and instead form a Joint General Staff in order to oversee the restoration of the Republic.

Upon seizure of power, military units were immediately dispatched to the midwest, Minnesota and North Carolina to suppress and control these regions. New York was also attempted to be reached however socialist Pennsylvania refused passage for the Military. In the Midwest, crossing of the Rockies was considered too dangerous to be done, as Idaho and Montana also fell into military control, however with socialist militias in the region established.

With most midwestern states, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolyna and Maryland loyal to him, MacArthur have started raising up the local national guard units, in preparation for what’s to come.

The United States of America (Chicago Government)

After the failed attempt to place Reed under house arrest, Socialist underground units began escorting him back to Chicago. With a general strike declared about 3 days after the Army Putsch, most major cities around America is in flames, aside from those mainly in New England, Minnesota, North Carolina or Virginia, where reactionary National Guardsmen managed to silenced any form of revolt before it began. The exception is in New York City, where Manhattan alongside Queens and Brooklyn are firmly under socialist militia’s control. In the deep south, socialist forces managed to maintain an area of exclusive power as they seized stronghold cities and counties.

As John Reed declares the supposedly legitimate government of the United States in Chicago, socialists across the nation pledged their support to him. The NUP that had backed Reed into power in a compromise, now have been broken up as more moderate Republicans refuse to work further with the Socialists, leaving the Progressives in an uneasy alliance with the SPA. The Republicans instead remain in hiding inside Military territory, biding their time to rise.

The Socialists now must scramble to assemble an army before the wrath of the Military Government descends upon them.

American Protection League

Despite MacArthur’s declaration, most western states, while anti Socialist for the most part, do not buy into his military junta. Thus using MacArthur’s orders to mobilise the National Guard, the state governments have their prerogatives to secure their own internal borders, and with the military incapable of projecting power over the Rockies, are now functionally independent states. This comes with issues of course, as without Federal support certain states just lack the essentials to just simply survive. Thus in a conference between 7 State Governments (and Alaska) in mirror to Bretton Woods in the west, California, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona and Utah declared the American Protection League, a coalition government of states in order to provide each other the basic necessities and protect themselves from both MacArthur’s autocratic regime and the Socialists. Despite this, socialist militias still plague northern Washington. While providing lip service to DC, and technically recognising MacArthur’s government, the APL is for the most part self serving only, and bide its time to wait for the victor of the war when order is restored. The American Pacific Fleet however, remains in port in California, awaiting for DC’s orders.

Other outer lying territories

Hawai’i is also functionally an independent nation. The outlying US Territories in the Pacific pledge themselves to MacArthur’s Military Government, with the US Pacific Fleet still ready to protect them. Puerto Rico is also essentially an independent nation, with no factions able to touch them, and Puerto Rico itself fearing mainland retaliation, retains the status quo. The same also applies to the US Virgin Islands.
