Post Body

June 29th, 1936

The local populace of Bangkok was rudely awoken this morning to the sound of Type 89 I-Go Medium Tanks marching down the street, infantry marching in step behind him as rumors floated around the capital about a potential Chinese rebellion. With this in mind, and with the knowledge that the military had planned for an exercise to be held today, the public just watched, not inferring with the men as they converged on strategic locations around the capital.

The date of the coup was unplanned, with the action against the Siamese government taking place only after it was revealed that a crackdown on the Khana Ratsadon was expected to take place later that afternoon. The reason for the delay was caused by the police needing to confirmof the men involved, as most of them held high ranking positions in the Siamese military and civilian life. With hours before they would all be potentially arrested for high treason, the military acted. Under the command of Phraya Phahon, the military would quickly surround the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, reading out the "Declaration of the New Siamese State" to the assembled men who would give a hearty cheer in response.

Emboldened by this, Phraya Phahon and his men would force their way into the Throne Hall, seizing it for themselves as other detachments acted on this, detaining high-ranking government officials and transporting them to the Throne Hall before they could escape and call upon the rural garrisons to support a counter-coup. However, despite the haste the plotters had done in locking down Bangkok, Prince Purachatra - the Minister of Commerce and Communication - was able to leave the city, giving the King in Hua Hin crucial information about the status of the government, painting a bleak picture for the captured nobility's survival should armed resistance to the coup be conducted.

The King, stating to those gathered around him that "I could not sit on a throne besmirched by blood," and given confidence by the plotter's commitment to peace, would return to Bangkok on a gunboat dispatched from Sattahip without too much hassle. The plotters, with the instruments of government finally within their control, would announce that there will be a three month period to assemble a suitable Constitution for the Siamese state and following ratification of the Constitution, elections would be held for both the newly founded People's Committee of Siam as well as the Assembly of People's Representatives.
