Though Black Monday has not affected us to the extent that it has affected the old empires, it has nevertheless caused a downturn in the Serbian economy. Petar Bojović, after lengthy discussions with Crown Prince Alexander, as well as the cabinet, has authorized a series of measures to alleviate the crisis and the downturn. The omnibus laws, dubbed the ‘New Economic Policy’ go into effect immediately.
Grain Subsidy Act of 1936
To bolster the agrarian class which makes up the majority of Serbia’s economy, Belgrade has agreed to subsidies to farmers that struggle to sell their product. The subsidy will be offered both in the form of aid from the government in addition to a 20% increase in the amount of grain that the government purchases for the national stockpile.
Nowhere in the Grain Subsidy Act is the ethnonym “Serb” mentioned, but rather “citizens of Serbia” is used, and the government is stressing that this Act applies to Albanians farming in the fertile Metohija in Kosovo, propagandizing that where the Albanian monarchy floods the market with cheap Bulgarian grain, the Serbian government cares for its Albanian citizens.
Unemployed Mobilization Measure
To provide income for those that has found themselves unemployed due to the closure of German owned businesses in Belgrade and other closures due to the crisis, a contingent of 25,000 reservists, with preference to those recently unemployed, will be mobilized for “training” and other reservist duties in Niš. By being elevated to the position of infantrymen on account of their mobilization, they will be able to be payed a soldier’s wages.
