Owning a cargo bike is neat as

Post Body

I thought I'd post a bit about my life with a cargo bike. We live in Newtown, and luckily have an off street park, so we can use our car whenever we need to, but we do 90% of our trips by bike. I have a box bike, one with a big box on the front, and my wife has an ebike with panniers on the back.

I use the cargo bike to drop the kids at daycare. We have a raincover so even on rainy days, they love being in there. There's room for the two kids, plus all their bags, plus my laptop bag.

I can then ride straight into town when I'm working in the city. With a good jacket and the assist motor, the weather isn't really a deciding factor. If it's really terrible weather I'll usually work from home, or sometimes take an uber to work if I have a meeting. I very seldom drive in, unless I just want to use the car for fun.

Luckily my work has bike parking, so I can ride straight into the bike parking and lock up my bike.

We do pretty much all our shopping with the bikes now. My wife can get two shopping bags into her panniers, so she can do a small shop, and I can do massive shops with the box bike. It's easy to get a bikepark right outside moore wilsons or countdown. It's no problem buying a case of beers or soda water.

If I'm doing other random errands (picking up computer equipment for work, or random shopping), I can do that in the box bike too. The last time I had to use the car to pick something up was getting a dryer (used the station wagon).

We're not anti car, we use our car to go away for weekends, and to go and see family up SH1 or SH2. It's just way more fun and faster to use the bikes around town.

Anyway, just some anecdotes from our lives.

Be interesting if the thorndon quay road changes happen, I'll make a point of going to soundline on the cargobike and buying some new speakers or something 😅
