Two questions/discussion (remote amp control and welding skills)

First, have you guys and gals made remote amp controls for welders that aren't made for it? Would anyone be interested in a product that could do that? The methods I thought of so far are wiring an extra resistor in the control circuit or use a small servo or stepper to drive the knob for the amp setting. What do you think?

And what would be a good progression of excercises to go from flat beads and horizontal fillets to decent root passes and vertical welding? I only have a stick welder
