The Strangers project (Full title: Goodbye Strangers and the Fearfull Frontier) is... weird. A multimedia art-project/anthology.
The bulk of the material here is a series of encyclopedia entries relating to a bestiary of creatures called Strangers. Strangers are biologically impossible creatures that live invisibly in plain sight, going about their inscrutable business and influencing the human world in subtle but profound ways. over a hundred species of these creatures, each unique, fascinating, and both vaguely unsettling yet oddly appealing.
The 'meta plot' such as it is, must be inferred through either reading the ancillary timelines, or, a more fun option, stitching it together by connecting offhand comments and reading between the lines. Think like the lore in Dark Souls.
Except that there are multiple levels of story-within-story at play. For example, one of the 'modules', which are how the site is divided up, Zeroworld, is the bestiary of a video game created within the setting as an act of political protest over something else going on in the main fictional setting. A second module, Matatown, is a similar work, but from the 'pro' side of the issue that Zeroworld author is 'anti' on. The two authors may or may not also be exes. Maybe. I think. Some of this is hard to parse.
So, to summarize, you have fiction-within-fiction being used to characterize and develop a relationship between two fictional authors, who are never seen or heard from directly. And that is something that I have never seen before.
I am not doing justice just how good this is, once you get past the entry-barrier of getting used to the format. The world it builds, and to a lesser extend the 'plot' and 'characters', are incredibly fascinating, and the site is criminally under-rated. Not for everyone, both for the structural oddness and the odd mix of horror, dark comedy, oblique homo-eroticism, psychedelic visual style, and sheer mind-screw at play, but if you can stomach it, you will be rewarded.
Side-bar, are there any other sub-reddits that may be interested in this?
