I need some diet advice for a safe diet?

I am a 5'8 197 lbs adult male, and I want to diet effectively and safely. My goal is a 1600 calorie per day diet, and I want to know how to do that safely. Should I be taking multivitamins, or something? I have little to no knowledge or experience dieting, but I have discipline and a drive to lose weight. Thank you.
