Is swimming good for weight loss or even toning?

I am 18F, 5’8 and 180lbs. I am in my second year of college and the fitness center has a pool. I was thinking about doing laps in the mornings before I have classes but I want to know if it will help with weight loss or making my look more toned or anything? As a kid, I was on a swim team for a few years, and so I still know how to fairly well. Just wondering!!
