The way I put rhythm together in music is to first keep a steady beat, since rhythms sound over a beat. When I have come up with a good pattern I repeat it so it sticks.
In the video I demonstrate this form by moving with the beat while speaking the rhythm on "da." The order of the rhythmic patterns that I demonstrate is slightly different than the original. Same patterns just rearranged. With this, I would need to shape the lyrics into the new form. Although not shown in the video, it is played in the right hand as melody and harmony.
I also demonstrate other techniques that can add interest to the music, like the octave, pedal point, and chord variations. Playing open octaves, especially in the bass line, makes the music sound bigger. I play the octaves using a rhythm that fits the character of the song and the octaves move through the root note of each chord. Pedal point is a held note in the bass line that lasts through the chord changes above it. The name "pedal point" comes from the foot pedals of the organ, where the bass notes are sustained through changing harmonies. It is often used to create tension in music as the sustained bass note becomes a non-chord tone.
For some chord variation, I use suspended chords where the 3rd of a chord is replaced with the 4th (sus4 or sus) or 2nd (sus2). In this case, it is a variation of the B major chord as Bsus4 and Bsus2. Suspended chords also provide interest as they are more mysterious sounding.
