Noob trying to learn using DAW's and creating ambient music

Proficient guitar and bass player, some piano experience. Trying to create my own ambient/trancy/jazzy music ala Tycho/Emancipator/GoGo Penguin to write and play guitar to. Eventually bass and piano too.

I know this gets asked a lot, but what would you guys recommend for a DAW? i don't need free but i don't want to spend a ton either.

On the other side of things, if anyone here creates music like i mentioned above and wants some guitar in there by someone else, PM me. I'd love to see what i can offer.
