Making music and composition software

Hi all!
Essentially, I just want to make music, and at the moment, just for the fun of it.
I'm assuming the process is something like; compose a song, record it and then edit it. Would this be the way to go about it?
Also, for composing, is there any specific software or programs I should grab or use? I'm in Aus and using a mac (it's all i've got) if that matters.
