How to get vocals to sound like this?

I really like how the vocals sound in the song Undo by The 1975. I like how you can hear the breaths between each phrase. I assume that this involves a lot of compression but when I tried my hand at using a compressor I couldn't really get the right sound. What type of effects and recording techniques should be used and how should I program the effects?
