Amateur trying to get off the ground - have a few questions related to DAWs, synths and samples
Post Body

Okay, so right now, I have some crappy DAW off of the Steam store (Music Creator 6 Touch) that's good enough to put a basic beat together, and there's no way to use custom sounds without a plugin (which I don't have) and most of the included sounds suck. So, I have a few questions:

  • First off, should I just up and get a better DAW? Ableton and FL Studio both seem quite good and I could probably get away with the cheapest FL Studio as I don't think I need the inbuilt sampler and such (Audacity seems sufficient). Alternately, something free and reasonably good with custom-sound capability would be fantastic.

  • Secondly, in regards to said samples, I have a bunch of different sounds I want to use but I can't get them in. Any recommendations for plugins or MIDI sources that can use my sounds for the composition?

  • And finally, the synths. If you have any good free recommendations, again, that would be super cool. Looking for a retro feel (think Kavinsky or Hotline Miami).

I have very little idea what I'm doing, but I really want to make some tunes, and the instruments in this DAW really aren't doing it for me (half of them sound atrocious and the other half are mediocre). Help me, Reddit - you're my only hope!
