Duck boat essentials
Post Body

Just picked up my first duck boat, a 1448M

It's got a floor, and a blind, plan is to add nav lights/stern light, light bar, carpet, and bilge pump.

Is there anything else I should consider? Might extend the bow a tad and make it into a dog blind of sorts. But I'm mainly concerned about electrical things I should be buying (I.e. rocker panel size, and battery size)

But any thoughts are welcome. I mainly will be hunting a mix of big(ger) river, and off shoots and marshes/ponds.

Is the battery just for running lights? Or is it for starting the motor as well? Are the lights all led? If it’s just for running LED lights, you could get away with a small lithium battery like a 30-50ah and probably only need to charge it every few trips.

Before you mount the battery, I highly recommend to load the boat up with its normal load, then experiment with battery placement to get the boat to handle correctly. Batteries are generally heavy (unless you go lithium) and can seriously affect the performance of the boat.

Finally use quality wire, switches, and connectors. This will save headache in the near future. For splicing wires together, I’d use uninsulated butt connectors then seal them with marine grade heat shrink (has an adhesive to seal the connection). For spade terminals/ring terminals, get the heat shrink ones, but double it up with the marine grade heat shrink. Also don’t just wrap the wires in electrical tape to make a “loom”. Buy some decent braided cable loom.

Old saying holds especially true with wiring “do it right, or do it twice”.

I’ve never used those solder ones. Seems like a gimmick to me. Plus solder joints don’t hold up well in high vibration environments such as marine and automotive use.
