Punishment for Unsupervised Portal to Shadowfell?

My party went through a ripple in the planes in Waterdeep to go to the Shadowfell against the order of High Mages. Nothing harmful necessarily was caused by it, but the risk of it was presumably great. What should be the punishment, if any, for this?
It's not covered by The Code Legal, but next session we are going to be doing the whole courtroom drama thing. I'm excited, but how do you think one should go about this?
