There Isn't much "Heist" in Dragon Heist
We all know that the end of the module is a little underwhelming, especially that there is no actual Heist to end it. The golden dragon is cool, but kind of puts an unexciting end to a super fast paced adventure. The Chase encounters within don't pull any punches, and they create an expectation towards the climax of the adventure.
The Climax that Dragon Heist Deserves
This adventure is so well written, and waterdeep is a world all its own. This adventure needs to cap off with the biggest bang that the story can offer. I suggest that the end to Dragon Heist be an intricate event in which the Gold is being smuggled underground by whichever Foe you are using.
A Plot Afoot Among Cheering Crowds
The idea should use elements from some of the most famous heist movies. The Foe has crafted a plan to move the great dragon hoard from a temporary hiding spot, after stealing it from the vault, to an entrance to under the city Skullport for safe keeping, at which point it will be all but lost. ------ This would be the real danger of losing.
These public events could all potentially host this encounter:
Kythorn 20: Dragondown
Alturiak 14: The Grand Revel
Mirtul 6–9: The Plowing and Running
Marpenoth 3: Day of Wonders
High Tension Encounters and a Countdown
The ideal, I think, would be a large parade-type event where the gold would be smuggled in Floats, Carts, or other large vehicles that could take the weight (lots of room for creativity here). An extended skill challenge mixed with small encounters where the stakes are very high. Some small fights in alleyways with the Watch distracted might create a ton of tension and drama here. Chase sequences would liven it up as well, as they will have been established earlier in the story.
The characters would have clues from the Golden Dragon about who came to get the gold and where it might be going, and WHEN they would steal it. Dropping hints about the holiday event would give SO much power and agency to the players, to decide when to strike and how and where.
Another fun thing to add might be the fact that the Watch might be out for them too, depending on their relationship with them.
I think there's a ton of potential here for taking out secret crossbow snipers in tall buildings, festivals and NPCs getting in the way of the PCs, looking out for suspicious characters, unreliable information.
What ideas can you guys think of?!!
