Ten Years is a long time to be in office, especially for a librarian. Rana Tadros was born into a Coptic Family and inducted as a citizen via her father's efforts at age five. At fourteen she was apprenticed to a government library, and at eighteen she passed her Sortition Exam, making her eligible for Public office. Nine sortings later, unselected and still working as a minor data gatherer, she found herself given the Commission of the entire state. Unlike most who are selected, she made the decision to remain in power, and spent the bulk of her office trying to create administrative reform.
In her final year, she has decided to expand for the first time past Cairo, and up the river. This task has been accomplished with reckless enthusiasm. A small fleet of armed boats have sailed upriver, with militia following them up the bank, and peeling off to explore the fertile lands beyond the horizon. They have, however, proven somewhat difficult to control, especially given the instructions to "standardize" the population.
On the east bank, the arrival of the Mandate has led to complete civil collapse, with many of the villages along the river being completely abandoned. On the west bank, the people proved more pliable. Still, the number of working folks to be found are sadly lacking, and those that lived in significant numbers were want to defend themselves. One settlement, known and a former trading partner, took three weeks to subdue, and was left a pile of rubble by the light guns of the river craft, and the unleashed militia.
The progress has been poor enough that the Commissioner has delayed the third stage of the advance this year, and is reconsidering the methods used. Perhaps the Militia are less effective outside of their home Delta? Perhaps trained soldiers should be better relied on?
Furthermore, advancing troops from the Socialist Republic of Arabia have been sighted along the gulf of Aqaba, causing some concern among the citizens of Mansoura.
For now, progress is slowed, and efforts begin to pacify the region reclaimed.
