Soviets suffer at 5.3?

I've noticed lately that it's been frustrating playing 5.3 with the Soviets. The guns on most of the tanks can't pen anything from a distance, especially the German heavies like Tigers and Panthers. I try to take the flanks and get side shots which always work. Any other advice to tackle heavy tanks with these crappy guns? I use the shell projection tool a lot to know where to aim at certain tanks, but anything at at range is impossible I feel like. Does anyone else feel like this? Is this the frustrating grind before making it to 6.3 or even the 7's?
