P-61 Gunners Rarely Fire

Can the P-61's gunners get a boost to their range? It seems at this moment that they only fire when enemy planes are within 300m of you, which has gotten me killed numerous times. I'm not asking for them to be more accurate or even good, just useful to some degree.
