Question about different book versions

Post Body
Let me start off by saying I’m not an avid book reader. I read maybe 1 or 2 books a month if that. When I was in middle school I read a version of war of the worlds that I really enjoyed, it had pictures but wasn’t really a picture book, there was maybe 10-15 pictures throughout the entire book.
Recently I picked up a copy at my local used book store to read since I’m 20 now and it’s been several years since I read the book. This one didn’t have the pictures which didn’t bother me, but for some reason this version seems different. I can tell it’s the original story but I’m not enjoying it as much as I did the one I read in middle school. From what I remember the one I read has the same story but the writing may have been different, the one I’m currently reading just isn’t doing it for me. Any one know if there’s a different version that may have been the one I read in middle school?
