My brother in law and I both went to our first event over the weekend, an RTT near Orlando at Layton Gaming. Ended up being around 30 players with a wide variety of factions. I took Templars and he took Necron.
I was blown away by how kind and friendly all three of my opponents and players from other tables were. All three could tell very quickly I was new and so they all had a lot of things they shared with me, things I could do, rules I was forgetting, and neat little tricks to maximize what my units could do on the board. And everyone commented how neat it was I brought a mostly firstborn list including a good chunk of old school metal models.
It was far far more fun than I even anticipated. Even with getting almost shut out in my first two games and then losing an extremely bloody game in the final round where I managed to play probably the best game I’ve ever played and still lost by around 50 points.
On the flip side I learned SO much. I know I’ll be a much better player now having gone than I ever was before.
If there’s anyone on the fence about going to tourney events please give it a go. You might end up having a smashing good time like I did, and I certainly plan on returning to central Florida as soon as I can, so that hopefully I can play my opponents again and give them a tougher game!
