Questions about painting

So, I wrongly thought there would only be a 'couple' paints going into a model. Boy was I wrong. Now I came here to ask what is a nice number of paints to use, bases, details, washes, etc., for someone who is new to this like me. For army sake, I am painting Tyranids as my first army. Just wanted to hear from more experienced painters since I this is a bit intimidating for me haha.
