(Note: The following is based on the leaked Necron Codex, and I may be proven wrong if there are any changes in the final release.)
So, I really want to include some Deathmarks in my Necron army, since I love the model and the "Etheral Interception" ability... but no matter how much I stare at the numbers, I just can't justify it.
Comparing them with Immortals with Gauss Blasters:
- Same statline
- Same weapon range, both Rapid Fire 1
- But the Deathmarks shoot S4 AP0, vs the Immortals S5 AP-2
- Deathmarks do a mortal wound at a 6 and can snipe characters.
- Deathmarks cost 2 points more.
Now, even with the mortal wound, I have a hard time thinking of a situation where I can deep strike them and really have an impact. Most characters have a SV of at least 3 , so AP0 is barely a threat and most likely, the occasional mortal wound will be all I can hope to achieve. Have them attacking units instead of characters doesn't improve things to much.
I've been looking at the other stuff in the Codex to find ways to support them, and found very little:
- Picking the right dynasty, you can bring them to AP-1.
- A Lord and/or Overlord can buff their shooting... but then, he can't deep strike in with them.
All in all, just taking the cheaper but stronger Immortals seems the better choice in pretty much every regard, even if I don't get the sweet deep strike abilty.
...or am I missing something?
