Building first army, need advice

So I got this Black Templar set for Christmas and am currently in the build and paint stage still. Iām brand new to the game and have no idea about building an army.
Am I now committed to the Black Templars? Can I mix and match other Imperium units? What do I need to add on to get started playing?
