Captured Companions

I've had two of my troop captured. One by the guard in Tiltren and one by the pitchfork guys in Edoran. In both cases I saw the icon showing my captives location but was too beat up to try to get them back right away. After a rest at the nearest town I can't find them anymore. I went back to the last place I saw their icons but no luck. Do they just disappear after a while?
