Having just read both the Pacific Trilogy by Ian W. Toll and Neptune's Inferno by Hornfischer, I thought this could scratch my itch that World of Warships and other titles fail to. While it somewhat does, there are some irksome mechanics that really undermine what this game attempts to do.
One of these quirks is the management of the carrier task group's Combat Air Patrol and engaging flying boat or scout aircraft.
I've seen others refer to "plane spam" and I guess this may somewhat abut that complaint. But specifically, trying to keep my CV hidden and shoot down flying boats seems to be the majority of my tactical engagements (other than submarines, of course).
Naval surface groups being scouted was a historically accurate problem, but I feel like defeating those scouts and managing your CAP should be more of an automated process. I think of Total War's auto-resolve feature that you can comfortably use in lieu of fighting in real-time when you have overwhelming numbers or the engagement is a small scale affair.
I wonder how hard it would be to implement a fix to make shooting down scouts by your carrier fighters an automatic process tied to a dice roll (RNG)?
