Good primers on mechanics of modern artillery engagements?
Post Body

I've been looking for any good accounts on the dynamics of modern artillery engagements (what's happening in Ukraine has sparked interest but it's always been something I've wondered about) - looking for any material on the topic: books, magazine articles, videos, podcasts - will take anything. A few thoughts that have come to mind:

  • The situation in Ukraine - is it representative of what theory suggests most conflicts might look like (i.e. NATO v. Russia, hypothetically)?
  • Ukraine is often compared to WW1 - this feels simplifying - is it accurate? What are the differences if not? What is the density of manpower / firepower relative to WW1? What are the casualty rates like?
  • Is it simply a matter of detection / having superior angles or longer range? What other factors determine how to gain an advantage?
  • What are the roles of other elements of an armed force? If air superiority / supremacy (not sure these terms are correct in this context) could be established, how does that change the above dynamics?

Apologies if this has already been covered - I found this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/WarCollege/comments/mxnup0/artillery_in_modern_warfare/) but it was pre-Ukraine, so imagining there might be some more specific takes at this point.
