A fun bit of WW2 trivia that often comes up is that Germany's WW2 military was still primarily dependent on horse-bound logistics. But I'm curious about how the German state and military managed to procure the presumably tens of millions of horses needed to staff the military?
Were there giant state-run stud farms devoted to breeding and raising military draft horses? Was there a "horse tax" on farmers? In the interwar period, Germany maintained a shadow military ready for expansion when Versailles disarmament terms were ended - was there an equivalent program for horses?
