I recently saw a bit on the equipment of Prussian and Austrian armies during the battle of Königgrätz and I wondered when I heard that the Austrians were still using muzzle loaders. When I did some more research I found out about the fact that their Lorenz rifle, while using cartridges, still had to be loaded from the front. Even more, the cartridge had to be broken up to do it. My question is: Why bother with cartridges then? The loading procedure of pouring powder down the barrel --> Putting the bullet in --> ramming the bullet --> putting on a percussion cap is still so very similar to the old age of powder horns and loose musketballs
